Welcome to the
Flute Studio of
Sandy Kipp Iles
Sandy Kipp Iles has been teaching private flute lessons since 1979 and finds teaching to be one of the most satisfying aspects of being a professional musician.
Want to Play the Flute?
Here’s why you should consider lessons.
To some music is an art or expression of love and life, and to some it’s simply a hobby and fun. Playing an instrument gives many students a sense of self, and a source of confidence, of challenge, and an introduction to self-discipline. Research has shown studying an instrument helps students learn other subjects more thoroughly and can help an adult keep their mind sharp by exercising their brain.
A consistent practice plan encourages students to set goals, strive for excellence, and can boost one’s self-esteem. Students of all ages and abilities learn a greater appreciation for the arts, and the one-on-one nature of private lessons can have an immense influence on a student’s growth and maturity.
Fundamentals ~ Confidence ~ Performance ~ Challenge ~ Encouragement
Music is Fun!
That’s why we play instruments.
The more we improve as musicians, the more fun we have. I stress fundamentals and practice techniques early so you will improve quickly. This allows you to play more styles of music. I will help you find your artistic voice to express your musicality. Interpretation and phrasing are the musical goals I strive for.
Most importantly, I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” approach to teaching. I customize lessons to help you achieve your musical goals.
Do you want to play the flute for fun?
Do you need help with your school ensemble music?
Have you always wanted to try the flute?
Did you play when you were younger and want to start again?
Have you considered being a Music Major at the college level?
Do you want to be a professional flutist?
I've been taking lessons with Ms. Sandy since fourth grade and I have never had anything but a positive experience! I can tell that she genuinely cares deeply about her students and wants them to succeed, both musically and in life. Each and every lesson, she works with me to develop the most effective method for me as an individual. Although I sometimes struggle to fit flute into my schedule, she has always been understanding and works with me to find the best way for me to continue playing flute without sacrificing my other commitments. Without her methodology, I don't think I would have been motivated to learn flute for this many years, and I couldn't ask for a better teacher!

And just who am I?
I have taught hundreds of students in the past four decades, and I have loved every second of it. I love watching the smile on a student’s face when they bow at the end of a performance, win a challenge at school, complete a higher level of CMMP, are accepted to a university, start a professional career, or simply learn a new piece of music that they enjoy!

What is CMMP?
The California Music Merit Program is an annual goal-oriented achievement program for students of all ages and levels that I created in 2008 for students dedicated to practice and improvement. For more info, click here.
In addition to lessons, what other opportunities do you offer?
For students who are interested in more than just private lessons, I offer annual recitals, flute parties, the option to participate in CMMP, the CSUN Flute Fest, the Sterling Flute Choir, among many other performance opportunities.
Is it ever too late to start learning the flute?
No! When we are young, new skills develop quickly because we are in the learning “mode,” but I find adults bring life experience to new skills, and often understand music and the flute at a deeper level. It is never too late!
I live far away, do you offer online lessons?
Yes! I teach lessons over Zoom, Facetime and other digital formats that are convenient for my students.
I have always wanted to learn the flute, but I don’t think I have time for lessons.
Trying something new that inspires you may help you find the time needed! You don’t need a lot of time to get started. Give it a try!
How long are lessons and what are your rates?
I generally teach one hour lessons, but 30 and 45 minute lessons are also available. Contact me for current lesson rates.
I’m interested in auditioning at Cal State University, Northridge. Where can I get more info?
Email me for more information or to discuss what you are looking for.
Here’s what others have asked!
“Sandy Iles is the most resilient, genuinely inspiring, unequivocally intelligent, kind human being and educator I have ever had the pleasure to work with. I have had concrete aspirations of becoming a professional musician since I was a child, yet no real sense of reality about the rigorous progress it would take to accomplish this. Professor Iles bridged the gap between dreams and reality for me through her knowledgeable instruction and ongoing support. Not only did she provide me with all of the tools needed to succeed, she taught me with such patience and positivity.”
